AMD Strikes Back: Significant Price Drop for RX 7900 XT Challenges Nvidia's RTX 4070 Super"

Kudos to AMD for making a bold move on a day that's supposed to be all about Nvidia. Today marks the release of Nvidia's RTX 4070 Super, a highly anticipated event for gaming enthusiasts. But guess what AMD does? It throws a major price cut at one of its top graphics cards in this generation, giving Nvidia a run for its money and countering its big release. Coincidence? Highly doubtful. The big question now is, will this price cut be enough when Nvidia unleashes the RTX 4070 Ti Super?

Enter AMD's RX 7900 XT, the GPU that just got significantly more affordable, with an official price tag of $750. Some models are even hitting the shelves at a mere $710. Initially launched at a hefty $900, it never quite stole the spotlight as AMD's flagship, with the RX 7900 XTX, priced just $100 higher, often stealing the show due to its impressive performance. The RX 7900 XT became somewhat overlooked in AMD's lineup, and its price quickly dropped to $800 and even lower at certain retailers over the past year.

Although the gradual price decline over the last 13 months might slightly diminish the impact of this latest cut, on paper, the card has gone from $900 to close to $700. Priced around $710, it emerges as a compelling alternative to the new RTX 4070 Super, which, as evaluations suggest, falls behind the RX 7900 XT at various resolutions. However, the introduction of DLSS 3 and ray tracing by Nvidia adds a new layer to the comparison. Running Cyberpunk 2077 at ultra settings, 4K resolution, with ray tracing and DLSS 3 enabled, the RTX 4070 Super produced 77.5 frames per second (fps) in testing, while the RX 7900 XT averaged 18 fps. This, though, speaks more to the prowess of Nvidia's DLSS 3 than the merits of the new GPU itself.

Looking ahead, when the RTX 4070 Ti Super hits the market with its upgraded specs and the same $800 price tag, AMD might face a tougher challenge. With expectations that the new Nvidia launch will perform on par with the RTX 4080 (non-Super), it's likely to outshine the RX 7900 XT in various scenarios. Priced at $800, it puts the RX 7900 XT in a tricky spot on the market – not quite affordable enough to be a steal and not quite powerful enough to be a must-have.

However, for those uninterested in DLSS 3, the current discounts on the RX 7900 XT present appealing deals. And the added bonus? You'll still save $50 to $100 compared to buying the RTX 4070 Ti Super when it hits the shelves. It's worth noting, though, that according to TweakTown, this price drop may be a seasonal promotion rather than a permanent cut. So, if you're considering it, it might be wise to make your purchase swiftly before AMD changes its mind.
