TikTok, known for catapulting songs into viral sensations, is now venturing into the realm of AI-assisted songwriting. The platform is testing a feature named AI Song, designed to let users flex their songwriting skills with the assistance of AI technology.
AI Song harnesses the capabilities of the large language model called Bloom to generate songs from text prompts. Users can input their lyrics in the text field while creating a post, and TikTok will suggest AI Song to enhance the post with sounds, allowing users to toggle between different genres such as pop, hip-hop, and EDM.
Barney Hooper, a spokesperson for TikTok, clarified that the term "AI song generator" is not technically accurate, and the feature is currently in a testing phase. He mentioned that any music used comes from a pre-saved catalog created within TikTok, pairing lyrics with pre-saved music in genres like pop, hip-hop, and EDM.
While the feature is still in its early stages and not available to all users, some TikTok enthusiasts have started experimenting with AI Song. Initial results, however, seem less than stellar. Despite the availability of auto-tuning vocals, many creations are reportedly out of tune. For instance, a TikTok user named Jonah Manzano attempted to create a song that seemed to elongate the word "comedy" with unnecessary syllables. Another user, Kristi Leilani, attempted to recreate a Britney Spears song but faced challenges with off-key vocals.
It's worth noting that AI-generated songs are not entirely new to TikTok. The platform has seen the virality of AI-generated tracks, including the infamous AI Drake and The Weeknd song titled "Heart on My Sleeve." Notably, Bad Bunny has even criticized listeners for embracing an AI sound-alike posted on TikTok.
TikTok isn't the sole platform exploring generative AI features for its users. YouTube, for example, has been testing a music creation functionality that allows users to compose songs based on text prompts or hummed tunes. The feature, known as Dream Track, enables users to create 30-second snippets in the style of popular artists.
In a bid for transparency, TikTok has introduced features to help users identify AI-created content on the app. The platform has also updated its rules, mandating users to disclose the use of AI in their content. As TikTok delves further into the fusion of AI and creativity, it remains to be seen how users will embrace these evolving features and whether improvements will address the initial challenges observed in AI Song's early trials.
